Abuse, much less child abuse, is something that I will never understand. John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats was no stranger to abuse from the hands of his stepfather. After his stepfather passed away in 2004 The Mountain Goats put out an album entitled “The Sunset Tree” that chronicled that time of John’s life. Thou admittedly a dark subject matter especially since it was so personal, the album has a strangely triumphant feel and is one of the best albums by the band. The liner notes sum it up the best.

“Made possibly by my stepfather, Mike Noonan (1940-2004): may the peace which eluded you in life be yours now. Dedicated to any young men and women anywhere who live with people who abuse them, with the following good news: you are going to make it out of there alive. You will live to tell your story. Never lose hope.”

With that in mind, I wanted to try to keep a somewhat positive feel to the illustration.
