Even though Helmet was considered a metal band I never really thought of them that way. They were heavy, but John Stanier’s use of syncopated and funkier rhythms always gave the music a groove that most metal acts didn’t have. Most metal bands around the time played on the 2 and 4 which had a more straight-forward feel. Believe me I’m not knocking metal at all. I grew up on it, and it’s how I learned to play drums. Well punk should get some credit as well.
