It was only a matter of time before I had to do a Jane’s Addiction sketch, especially since I’ve already covered Porno for Pyros. They were probably one of the more influential bands of the late 80’s and early 90’s along with The Pixies. Jane’s Addiction created a memorable blend of funk, pop, psychedelia and metal that helped establish the now overused and seemingly generic “Alternative Music” label. I remember shopping at Hastings Records and buying bands like The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Pixies and Jane’s Addiction in the small, single row of cassettes labeled “alternative.” I think I used to know what that meant.

This is another artist that I first heard on a SxSW sampler years ago. The slight blue-grass/western feel is what caught my attention, and this song always gets stuck in my head. I even hear a little bit of The Pixies in their sound particularly the song “Nimrod’s Son.” I need to keep an eye on the next time this three piece comes to town, because I bet they have a lot of energy live.

The Breeders released a new EP in April 2009, but I opted to feature the song that made them famous. Though not as influential as The Pixies, The Breeders put out albums that were equally as quirky and original and often more diverse than Kim Deal’s work with The Pixies.

I promised I’d do a Pixies song, and I finally did. Two versions of this song were recorded. Though I prefer the faster, more rocking version, today’s sketch fits the UK Surf version better.

Most of you know Frank Black as Black Francis of the Pixies. (I know I haven’t sketched a Pixies song yet and I’ve mentioned them twice now. I promise it’s coming.) If you aren’t familiar with any of his solo work there is plenty out there to listen to, and almost all of it is great. The man is a workhorse, because he turns out solid albums all the time, many of them bridging genres from folk to country to rock. It’s no wonder that he has a headache.

You can definitely hear the Pixies influence in this song (soft-loud-soft-really loud). Turn this one up, and kick off your weekend, even though the image is little dark.
